Sub:- Memorandum on upgrading Ispat General Hospital (IGH),Rourkela into a Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital
Respected Sir :
We the people of Greater Rourkela areas would like to draw your kind attention towards our proposal for upgrading Ispat General Hospital(IGH) at Rourkela into a full fledged Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital.
The first Public Sector Steel Plant in the country was set up in Rourkela in 1955, owing to its location in the mineral rich belt of Sundargarh District in Odisha. This plant attracted a huge workforce from all over Odisha and India, hence residential townships like Steel Townships(comprising of 18 Sectors) and Fertilizer Township were set up with all amenities like 24 hours electricity and water supply. For medical services, a massive hospital known as Ispat General Hospital (IGH) was established at Sector-19 and a branch of this hospital was opened in Fertilizer Township.
Ispat General Hospital is a 685 bed modern and well equipped hospital having the state of art technology with a motivated team of medical and para-medical professionals working to provide medicare of the highest standard. The various departments include Intensive Care Unit, Burn Center, Dialysis Centre, Blood Transfusion Center etc. It annually takes 33,000 admissions and looks after some 15 lakh patients in its OPD.
Not only the residents of Steel Township , but also the mine workers operated by SAIL do come here for their treatment. Also Non-SAIL employees from Rourkela and other parts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar,Jharsuguda and also from the nearby state of Jharkhand depend on this hospital as its well reputed for its health facilities. Most of the emergency cases of Rourkela are referred to IGH only.
Hence considering the above points and keeping the future needs ,this hospital should be upgraded into a Medical College and Super speciality Hospital. This would hardly require a budget of Rs 75-100 crores and would be an easy process instead of establishing a new Medical College and Hospital which will cost more than Rs. 250 crores.
In similar line , Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has already started working on its project at Bokaro which includes upgrading the 910 bed Bokaro General Hospital into a Medical College and Hospital. This hospital has more facilities than IGH like Intensive Coronary Care Unit, Haemodialysis Unit, Nuclear Medicine Laboratory, etc. Also it has the distinction of being the only one in Jharkhand being recognised by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi as a centre for imparting post-graduate training to candidates appearing for the Diplomat of National Board examinations.
Hence it’s a sincere request to you, to consider this proposal for upgrading IGH into a medical college for the betterment of the residents of Rourkela as well as the rest part of the Chota nagpur Plateau region who can immensely benifits out of it. This includes the neighboring districts of Odisha such as Keonjhar and Jharsuguda as well.
We also propose that once it is done, it can later cater to remote areas by opening small operational units of IGH ( 40-50 Beds) which in turn will work with IGH Rourkela in terms of consulting the specialists after the primary care at the local IGH unit. The concept can be well learnt from the hugely popular and successful stategy adopted by Aravind Eye Hospital of India.
Thanking you
Memebers of
Rourkela Unnayana Mancha
And
Well wishers of Greater Rourkela Area & Odisha.

I cant believe people have this much of time!! I accidentally landed on this page to find the number of my area’s ward councilor and was amazed to see the info on this page. Rkl is a self-sufficient, green, clean and good city.
Forget the dream of making it a metropolitan and let people live happily.
BTW WTF is hemananda? LOL!
I am looking forward for such a step ahead.
I strongly support it.
I think it will be good to setup a new state-of-art and super speciality medical college cum hospital in rourkela. what this will do is that there wont be any waiting patients lined up in a queue to get admitted. And on the other hand partial upgradation of IGH can be thought about.
So, the students who want to join a medical course and also the patients both are happy.
I strongly support this movement. We the people will be very much grateful to SAIL(RSP).
Yes, I do support. Nice concept for Education and development in Rourkela.
Yes this is a good proposal for Rourkela. I support this strongly.
It is a good idea. Must be implemented for the benifits of all the people.
Rourkela DESERVE it!!!
SAIL Chairman Mr.C.S.Verma also given the proposal after being appointed as CHAIRMAN.
I support the cause for upgrading IGH to a super speciality hospital but proper steps should be taken by the Administration to upgrade the staff too. Because its just not the hospital but the Staff Members who go along a long way to make IGH a super speciality.
I agree
Desperately requiring more medical colleges & super speciality hospital over here at Rourkela. ESIC may be a dream for Rourkela. But SAIL Medical college n hospital is Possible. Right now modernization works are going on inside Steel Plant. Most probably after complition of modernization the authourities definitely would take a concrete decission & proceed regarding the SAIL Medical college issue. Let’s hope for the best (ESIC & SAIL)
I support the cause for upgrading IGH to a super specialty hospital but proper steps should be taken by the Administration to upgrade the staff too. Because its just not the hospital but the Staff Members who go along a long way to make IGH a super specialty.
I support the above petition for the greater cause of Rourkela’
Govt. should have moral responsibility for this noble cause for this part of Odisha, instead of exploiting only huge revenue.I strongly support this venture.
With regards,
CSDAS
Fore most I think IGH’s service quality should be improved..the doctors and nurses should be given training and motivation on “Service with Smile”. And the Steel city badly needs a lot of improvement one of those is this Medical College.
I support for this Good cause.
i support this cause for the betterment of the people of rourkela

I support
Rkl is the place i born n brought up. please dont neglect it
I Support this great cause, Rourkela is having all the talent and IGH is one of the best Hospital in East.. It must be converted to a medical college & super specialty hospital.
Its a pity that we still need a public petition for such basic needs in a maasive country like India which is supposed to be growing.
i support, because recently two critical operation done here which can not done by three medical colleges inh odisha in cuttuk, berhampur &sambalpur .
I support the above petition. I.G.H must be converted into medical college. I support strongly.
upgrading IGH will enhance the quality of medical service available to the people apart from creating more qualified and trained medical professionals .
i strongly agree and support this mission. it will enhance the importance of the city.
The day when Rourkela came into existence it was way ahead of other cities of orissa in terms of infrastructure, Job oppertunities & other facilities. But now unfortunately the city is lagging behind many other cities due to lack of focus in this city.
Converting Rourkela Ispat General Hospital to a super speciality Hospital & a Medical College can take the city towards a new horizon of progress & prosperity. Also it will cater to my patients who go to cuttack and burla Medical colleges in case of extreme emergencies.
Very Much needed Medical College
It’s a welcome move. I fully agree with it.
I FULLY SUPPORT THE GREAT MOVE.
good attempt
I support this petition.
