Immediate Upgradation of Airports of Odisha
To: The Prime Minister, Republic of India
Sub: Upgradation of Airports and Air connectivity in Odisha.
Dear Sir:
While each of India’s parts should progress for India to go ahead, some are really falling behind, increasing the GAP in development. Such is the case with Odisha. In recent past various central projects have not been located in the other areas of Odisha, in a distributed manner, under the plea that areas are not Air connected. We have seen this argument again and again and again.
The recent Central University of Orissa (CUO), of Koraput, is a case in point. It’s VC, under the deceptive cover of poor connectivity of Koraput, has started a parallel campus in BBSR, while operating from Kolkata. This must be stopped and will be stopped.
But what stands out is lack of Regional Airports in Odisha and it’s lack of overall Air connectivity. We are thus presenting an overall proposal of Air connectivity in Odisha, with a request you thus Sir, to kindly consider & implement the following at the minimum:
- Upgrade the 60 years old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.
- Expedite and complete the construction of ongoing Domestic Airport in Jharsugda district, in western Odisha, within next two years.
- Reinvigorate and evaluate for a possible domestic airport for the unused South regional Jeypore Airport, Koraput in to action in next 2 years.
This will enable the remote areas of Odisha to be connected to the places of national importance and will prevent lack of air connectivity as a alibi, for not locating Institutes of National importance in the backward areas.
In addition to the above , Airports at Rourkela , Berhampur and Rayagada can be developed further in future which were once upon a time used for emergency landing. These airports can serve as feeder to the above full fledged Airports.

oDishA deserves better than these three airports. But this should be the beginning for an overall infrastructure upgrade in oDishA. Let oDishA stand up as a leading state in India, soon.

It would be really nice to have the airports. It would open up avenues of growth to the impoverished regions. Tourism for once. I would LOOOVE to visit Jeypore, if there is good connectivity to Bhubaneswar.
My heart and soul is with this kind of work for Odisha and I am hopeful the airports at Jharsuguda and Jeypore will really connect regionals of Odisha in much better way. Raiway connection is equally required specifically Khurda-Bolangir , Talcher-Biimlagad etc.
Orissa has always being neglected with respect to infrastructure development. Off late we have seen number of MoUs and mush noise about number of investment happening in Orissa. Some of it has actually happened and more of these are on papers only. We know that number of investments happening in the IT sector in Orissa have come to standstill due to the absence of any international airport. For IT investment to flow to Odisha/Bhubaneswar an international airport is an absolute must.
Again the Tourism sector is also getting affected due to the poor connectivity to International destinations. We know that whenever Orissa has been given a chance, it has delivered. It’s a rich state but has been always neglected by the centre.
We should have an international airport in the state
In these days air link to remote areas of Odisha and an International Airport in Odisaha is a need rather an alternative to the airports in nearby states. I fully support this petition’s good cause.
I whole-heartedly support an airport at Jharsuguda. This will enhance communication within Odisha. In addition, growth of infrastructure will mobilize other developments in this region.
Chief Minister Nabin Patnaik supports this great cause. Let us remain united for all developments in Odisha.
It is time to give Odisha it’s due.
With direct international connectivity to Bhubaneswar, and domestic air-connectivity to Wester Odisha, Orissa’s overall progress will get a jumpstart. THIS AIR CONNECTIVITY COMES AS THE HIGHEST PRIORITY ITEM ON THE LIST OF THINGS. You do this, the rest will fall in place.

A poor state like Orissa needs development in infrastructure. I strongly support this mission.
It’s extremely vital to have some good communication through air to Jharsuguda. Off late, so many big industries have come up but no improvement in communication. So it’s very esstial to have an airport for better communication. Also please note that for many of us the NRI face tremendous difficulty while visiting to western orissa since there is no airport. It takes terribly amount of time.

Odisha one of the largest contributors to the economical growth of the country has been neglected on various fronts.
But enough is enough now its time for action
With Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda as commercial airports other towns and cities should have domestic airports
Jharsuguda Airport is a necessary step to continue local development and keep the local youths out of the growing menace of Maoist movement.
Airport development is a good cause.

Lack of *international to BBSR*, and *domestic to Western Odisha* are hindering the growth of Odisha – particulary in *IT and TOURISM* sector, where Odisha has the highest potential (of course saving the rich minerals to the next generations, and capitalizing on Orissa’s 38% flora and fauna, and tribal culture for Tourism)
While Varanasi and Gaya are connected internationally, it is obvious of clear neglect of Odisha in terms of air connectivity.
In education also, NIT Rourkela and UCE Burla, and Sambalpur Univ suffers due to connectivity….. Campus recruitment for Orissa happens at BBSR, not at Rourkela or Burla, as companies dont have time traveling by Train/Car to recruit in these two premier institutes.
Orissa has only one running airport for the whole state and requires better air communication to progress. Especially Jharsuguda with multiple industries needs air travel facility for the existing and future industries. There are many trains that run through Jharsuguda to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar to name a few and surely there are passangers who would like to travel by air for business, pleasure as well as during health emergency situations.
There is an urgent need.
