Immediate Upgradation of Airports of Odisha
To: The Prime Minister, Republic of India
Sub: Upgradation of Airports and Air connectivity in Odisha.
Dear Sir:
While each of India’s parts should progress for India to go ahead, some are really falling behind, increasing the GAP in development. Such is the case with Odisha. In recent past various central projects have not been located in the other areas of Odisha, in a distributed manner, under the plea that areas are not Air connected. We have seen this argument again and again and again.
The recent Central University of Orissa (CUO), of Koraput, is a case in point. It’s VC, under the deceptive cover of poor connectivity of Koraput, has started a parallel campus in BBSR, while operating from Kolkata. This must be stopped and will be stopped.
But what stands out is lack of Regional Airports in Odisha and it’s lack of overall Air connectivity. We are thus presenting an overall proposal of Air connectivity in Odisha, with a request you thus Sir, to kindly consider & implement the following at the minimum:
- Upgrade the 60 years old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.
- Expedite and complete the construction of ongoing Domestic Airport in Jharsugda district, in western Odisha, within next two years.
- Reinvigorate and evaluate for a possible domestic airport for the unused South regional Jeypore Airport, Koraput in to action in next 2 years.
This will enable the remote areas of Odisha to be connected to the places of national importance and will prevent lack of air connectivity as a alibi, for not locating Institutes of National importance in the backward areas.
In addition to the above , Airports at Rourkela , Berhampur and Rayagada can be developed further in future which were once upon a time used for emergency landing. These airports can serve as feeder to the above full fledged Airports.

International Airport at BBSR: The major drivers for the economical viability are

• Strong Tourism (Buddhist, Puri/Chilika/Gopalpur sea beaches for international tourists, landing points for international tourists to visit other wonderful tourist attractions in western and southern Orissa
• Strong and growing presence of IT companies
• Education hub with a lot of national-level institutions and international seminars/symposiums
• Tens of thousands of NR Oriyas staying abroad who would prefer to fly to BBSR directly when available. They would visit Orissa more often if there are direct flights available to BBSR.

Immediate Completion and commissioning of Jharsuguda Airport

• Jharsuguda is the one of the three golden triangle cities in western Orissa
Rourkela: Industrial center of Orissa with a population close to a million and on a strong growth path
Jharsuguda: Upcoming industrial hub with multiple big industries
Sambalpur: Cultural center of western Orissa, coming up strongly
• A good airport at Jharsugda will cater to the big population centers in western Orissa, will be economically viable and will go a long way for faster growth of Orissa
Much needed infrastructure. It will pay itself back in the long run through consequent growth and development.
Jharsuguda Air Port Construction was in progress but since the MoU for land acquisation has been delayed at our State Govt. Level it ihas been at stalemate.
Orissa Govt. should release the land ASAP.

1. Upgrade the 60 decade old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.

This is a great idea and will immensely help people from western Orissa. There are so many huge industry around and all the senior executives spend so much of time only on travel. I am completely supportive of this wide.
This is the need of the hour. We in Juhar, New Delhi had worked a lot in 2006-08 to stop the sinister plan of Orissa Govt. to give land for extension of nearby Steel & Power project. There was a Public Hearing in this regard. Three buses full people had come from Jharsuguda & Brajrajnagar and protested, still then it was set aside.
The actual plan was to develop a Hub & Spoke system of Airports and make Jharsuguda a Hub. It could serve as for International Flights and big Cargo flights for Raipur, Ranchi, Rourkela and Bhubaneswar.
