Immediate Upgradation of Airports of Odisha
To: The Prime Minister, Republic of India
Sub: Upgradation of Airports and Air connectivity in Odisha.
Dear Sir:
While each of India’s parts should progress for India to go ahead, some are really falling behind, increasing the GAP in development. Such is the case with Odisha. In recent past various central projects have not been located in the other areas of Odisha, in a distributed manner, under the plea that areas are not Air connected. We have seen this argument again and again and again.
The recent Central University of Orissa (CUO), of Koraput, is a case in point. It’s VC, under the deceptive cover of poor connectivity of Koraput, has started a parallel campus in BBSR, while operating from Kolkata. This must be stopped and will be stopped.
But what stands out is lack of Regional Airports in Odisha and it’s lack of overall Air connectivity. We are thus presenting an overall proposal of Air connectivity in Odisha, with a request you thus Sir, to kindly consider & implement the following at the minimum:
- Upgrade the 60 years old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.
- Expedite and complete the construction of ongoing Domestic Airport in Jharsugda district, in western Odisha, within next two years.
- Reinvigorate and evaluate for a possible domestic airport for the unused South regional Jeypore Airport, Koraput in to action in next 2 years.
This will enable the remote areas of Odisha to be connected to the places of national importance and will prevent lack of air connectivity as a alibi, for not locating Institutes of National importance in the backward areas.
In addition to the above , Airports at Rourkela , Berhampur and Rayagada can be developed further in future which were once upon a time used for emergency landing. These airports can serve as feeder to the above full fledged Airports.

It will be our pride to say as an Odia , we have an International Airport and atleast two functional domestic airports in two different regions.
Also a remote terminal (with Bus service) for the Bhubaneswar airport must be established at Brahmapur so that passengers can check-in and take a bus to reach Bhubaneswar airport as like Dammam to Bahrain region in other countries.

for the overall developmentof the state as a whole, uniforrm infrastructure development throughout the state is the prime requisite. Airpport at Jharsuguda is overdue and is a must. Besides i also advocate for good road connectivity between Rourkela – Bhubaneswar plus immediate works on Talcher-Bimalagarh railroute.

It’s a big pity that we do not have a international airport even today. For any international destination we have to unnessesarily fly to KOLKATA / MUMBAI / DELHI & waste valuable time. The concern authorities must take proper actions for this.

this shouldn’t be up for discussion…bhubaneswar along with kolkata is only ne of the few airports along the eastren cost. also the state of Orissa should have a world class international airport and other airports should be developed urgently. its also beneficial for the govt. of India as Orissa has great potential in terms of revenue.
The Jharsuguda Airport has become a necessity now considering the industrialisation in this area and Rourkela .
The Bhubaneswar Airport also need to be upgraded to international airport .

As the no. of global companies being established in bhubaneswar is growing day by day hence people in order to travel across countries have to travel indirectly to larger cities like Kolkata, Mumbai etc. This calls for an urgency for an international airport at Bhubaneswar.
For Jharsuguda, it is seen as the future industrial heart of Odisha since lot of industries have opened up and are growing production as well employee wise day by day. A domestic airport is immediately required to accomodate the congestion which has happened in communication and transportation at jharsuguda.
Orissa is currently a good Business house of India.So at least at this point, GOVT of INDIA should not play the cheap politics…
