Immediate Upgradation of Airports of Odisha
To: The Prime Minister, Republic of India
Sub: Upgradation of Airports and Air connectivity in Odisha.
Dear Sir:
While each of India’s parts should progress for India to go ahead, some are really falling behind, increasing the GAP in development. Such is the case with Odisha. In recent past various central projects have not been located in the other areas of Odisha, in a distributed manner, under the plea that areas are not Air connected. We have seen this argument again and again and again.
The recent Central University of Orissa (CUO), of Koraput, is a case in point. It’s VC, under the deceptive cover of poor connectivity of Koraput, has started a parallel campus in BBSR, while operating from Kolkata. This must be stopped and will be stopped.
But what stands out is lack of Regional Airports in Odisha and it’s lack of overall Air connectivity. We are thus presenting an overall proposal of Air connectivity in Odisha, with a request you thus Sir, to kindly consider & implement the following at the minimum:
- Upgrade the 60 years old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.
- Expedite and complete the construction of ongoing Domestic Airport in Jharsugda district, in western Odisha, within next two years.
- Reinvigorate and evaluate for a possible domestic airport for the unused South regional Jeypore Airport, Koraput in to action in next 2 years.
This will enable the remote areas of Odisha to be connected to the places of national importance and will prevent lack of air connectivity as a alibi, for not locating Institutes of National importance in the backward areas.
In addition to the above , Airports at Rourkela , Berhampur and Rayagada can be developed further in future which were once upon a time used for emergency landing. These airports can serve as feeder to the above full fledged Airports.

I strongly support this requirement. It is a basic requirement for the below 7 important reasons:
1. Several international NGO travel to tribal regions in the state like Kalahandi to provide relief and support the most needy and lose a lot of time to meet the needy. Is this what the UPA Government is all about when it says that it addresses the weakest of the weak section?
2. Car Festival and Jagannath Temple which provides a lot of indirect income to the needy from Foreigners who frequent this. Jagannath Cult is very popular abroad and they find it so difficult to reach the only instance they can see the Lord of the World at Rath Yatra.
3. Samuka Beach Project , a Special Tourism Area cleared by the Centre, this is a basic mimimum requirement. Else we will develop a fantastic place which will be of no use and become financially unviable. Then there is no point in saying that centre gave some help. If you provide a school you need to assit in a school bus else how will it be possible for them to reach the school. Not to name visitors wanting to see the Sun Temple which is only of its kind in the country.
4. Minerals & Metals and Port & Shipping companies and consultants are frequenting Bhubaneswar and provide valuable services and technology to the country. Also several mine owners are the highest tax payers in the country. If we require this technical expertise from European and Nordic countries to continue we need to reduce their time of travel to Bhubaneswar. Time for them is of prime importance unlike the Chinese who are still willing to come in some instances (as they maintain a good work – life balance so this becomes a mandatory requirement).
5. Prime institutions like IIT BBSR, NISER and AIIMS require good international faculty as a bare minimum . The centre needs to assist here else the infrastructure will not reap the benefit the Centre has partly provided for. Lot of Faculty from the Oriya community would be able to travel from foreign univeristies apart from them getting other juniors.
6. This airport if made international will become the feeder for the smaller Airstrips in the state which is otherwise lying idle and is costing the state and centre only maintenance charges without any income. We have six including one near Kalahandi / Koraput area which is otherwise rotting.
7. The most neglected region in terms of a gap for international airport, producing the maximum taxes from labour intensive industries, needs urgent attention to convert this to Code F category international airport. Increasing no of flights when compared to other smaller airports decalred internation.

An airport at Jharsuguda will help a lot for improvement in flow of visitors to NIT Rourkela, Rourkela Steel Plant, Vedant, VSSUT, Sambalpur Univ etc. located in under-developed western Orissa.
I strongly support this petition….probably we should also address this petition to Chief Minister of Orissa.
I have heard since a long back regarding International Airport in Bhubaneswar.But till now there is no positive news.I think it will be great if we have it.
Bhubaneswar is growing and upgraded air port will definitely add value to it
Not only the international airport, the domestic airport needs an upgradation.Only two terminals are not sufficient for a growing city like Bhubaneswar.Moreover the city lacks a good public transport system as well.

Air-transport is a fast-track method of swift enhancement of communication within countries. This will have a multiplier effect on speculation as well as development of the state.

Upgraded Air Port is required for the growth of Bhubaneswar .It’ll create an image in the world map. As an Oriya ,I strongly support this requirement.
Today the only mode of air transport is BBSR. We should learn from Gujrat with 8 operational airports, even MP is far ahead with 4 operational airport. No reason why Odisha should be behind any state.

Odisha is a fast emerging commercial and educational hub. It also has a good tourism potential. So, upgradation is a bare need for these developments to be more pronounced

Measure factors of development to state is better facility of education and job opportunities. This will become true if so many IT companies will come to Odisha.
This will happen if our state provides better facility and communication. There is only one airport in BBSR which is not sufficient for the IT companies to establish there base.
Our state government should encourage by making our Airport as international Airport to give better facility.

Connectivity of Bhubaneswar airport with semi-major cities like, Lucknow, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Guwahati, Chandigarh etc. is a must. beautification of airport is a must. It is not even 1/1000 th of Hyderabad or Delhi airport. Some one needs to look into the matter.
