Immediate Upgradation of Airports of Odisha
To: The Prime Minister, Republic of India
Sub: Upgradation of Airports and Air connectivity in Odisha.
Dear Sir:
While each of India’s parts should progress for India to go ahead, some are really falling behind, increasing the GAP in development. Such is the case with Odisha. In recent past various central projects have not been located in the other areas of Odisha, in a distributed manner, under the plea that areas are not Air connected. We have seen this argument again and again and again.
The recent Central University of Orissa (CUO), of Koraput, is a case in point. It’s VC, under the deceptive cover of poor connectivity of Koraput, has started a parallel campus in BBSR, while operating from Kolkata. This must be stopped and will be stopped.
But what stands out is lack of Regional Airports in Odisha and it’s lack of overall Air connectivity. We are thus presenting an overall proposal of Air connectivity in Odisha, with a request you thus Sir, to kindly consider & implement the following at the minimum:
- Upgrade the 60 years old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.
- Expedite and complete the construction of ongoing Domestic Airport in Jharsugda district, in western Odisha, within next two years.
- Reinvigorate and evaluate for a possible domestic airport for the unused South regional Jeypore Airport, Koraput in to action in next 2 years.
This will enable the remote areas of Odisha to be connected to the places of national importance and will prevent lack of air connectivity as a alibi, for not locating Institutes of National importance in the backward areas.
In addition to the above , Airports at Rourkela , Berhampur and Rayagada can be developed further in future which were once upon a time used for emergency landing. These airports can serve as feeder to the above full fledged Airports.

Politicians & burocrats, pl try to understand that the world is changing very fast and you people have already dumped Odisa by your inactive credentials for many years. Every body should understand that it is cheaper to fly south-east Asia, Australia and many other countries from Orissa directly. Hey Netas & Chamchas pl live up to common man’s expections. There was a day when KALINGA was one of the largest and ancient states ruled by The Great ASHOKA. Budhism started from ODISHA. Not only Budhism but also the core of Hinduism Lord SRI JAGANNATH’s holy place is our ODISHA. If we talk about tourism, we got Puri,Chilka,Konark,Bhitarkanika,Similipal and many more places which attract tourists from different corners of earth. We are far better than anyother state of India, for our development and for the interest of the people not only from India but also from the tourists from the foreign countries we want an International Airport as soon as possible and two domestic Airports apart from Bhubaneswar.

We definitely need these three airports. Western Orissa should get a airport at Jharsuguda, BBSR upgraded to International Standards and Koraput should get a domestic airport. It’s a shame that it has not been done so far

This would be a giant leap towards the long withheld due development for the rich state of Odisha. With immense natural resources and diverse geography, Odisha has been looked down upon for decades now. People of Odisha have to proceed in self motivation towards achieving the national/international standards in the field of technology and tourism. There has to have political will and motivation to achieve these goals. Please take this forward and make it a success. Just a step forward to miles ahead.

A state as rich as Odisha in terms of history, culture, industries, education and ability of its people definitely deserve one.

Places like Manglore could have intrnationl airports, orissa has so much potential, so for the golden triangle in east, Bhubaneswar poses an urgent requirement to get upgraded to international standard. Great move. Odisha – about 156000 sq-km – has only one domestic airport. It is time we got a couple of domestic airports conecting the state well and also one international airport. I fully support this move.
