Introduction : This petition is all about upgrading the existing Domestic Airport at Bhubaneshwar to International Airport, expediting the work at Jharsuguda for Domestic Airport ( Which was proposed and got approved by center ) and evaluating a possible Domestic Airport at Jaipur, Koraput. These three airports are absolutely required for overall development of Odisha.

To: The Prime Minister, Republic of India

Sub: Upgradation of Airports and Air connectivity in Odisha.

Dear Sir:

While each of India’s parts should progress for India to go ahead, some are really falling behind, increasing the GAP in development. Such is the case with Odisha. In recent past various central projects have not been located in the other areas of Odisha, in a distributed manner, under the plea that areas are not Air connected. We have seen this argument again and again and again.

The recent Central University of Orissa (CUO), of Koraput, is a case in point. It’s VC, under the deceptive cover of poor connectivity of Koraput, has started a parallel campus in BBSR, while operating from Kolkata. This must be stopped and will be stopped.

But what stands out is lack of Regional Airports in Odisha and it’s lack of overall Air connectivity. We are thus presenting an overall proposal of Air connectivity in Odisha, with a request you thus Sir, to kindly consider & implement the following at the minimum:

  • Upgrade the 60 years old regional Airport at BBSR to an International Airport.
  • Expedite and complete the construction of ongoing Domestic Airport in Jharsugda district, in western Odisha, within next two years.
  • Reinvigorate and evaluate for a possible domestic airport for the unused South regional Jeypore Airport, Koraput in to action in next 2 years.

This will enable the remote areas of Odisha to be connected to the places of national importance and will prevent lack of air connectivity as a alibi, for not locating Institutes of National importance in the backward areas.

In addition to the above , Airports at Rourkela , Berhampur and Rayagada can be developed further in future which were once upon a time used for emergency landing. These airports can serve as feeder to the above full fledged Airports.

Justification & rationale for all of them are attached here.

Yours truly,
Citizens & Well wishers of Odisha

Some kind of egalitarian development in all the areas of India (or for that matter, any country) is beneficial not only for the people of undeveloped areas, but can also work as an insurance for country’s integrity.

the need of the needful has been neglected since ages. We are treated like a second last state in progress development and opportunities. west bengal a contemporary with less potential mineral resources strives better … only becuse they were a better servant to the british rule.. new delhi is the seat of the centre so improved every now and then. The disproportionate allocation of progress is just undeniable and is truly contradictory to the definition of secular and non regionalistic attitude adopted or attempeted to be advocate by the constitution . If the centre wants to overlook Odisha’s plight then it is just an example of step-mother treatment to Odisha.

Yes I strongly support this petition. I want to see Orissa and its people to grow further in all aspects of life. Our state has been neglected from ages. Even though we are rich in natural resources but still we are not yet developed. I want all the peoples of Orissa/India living in and outside of Orissa/India to come and support this petition, at the same time always try to think for the better future of our states, peoples and our country India.

  21. ID # 3719 :  Kanishka Arora  (Singapore,Singapore) says:

A functional airport in Jharsuguda and an international airport in Bhubaneshwar are critical infrastructure development for growth of Orissa. Just like access to water body and ports were critical for commercial success of an area in past eras; airports, good roads and development of infrastructure have become the key elements to attract capital and talent for continued growth and success of Orissa. As the upgrading of Jharsuguda’s airport was first discussed in 2008, it is ridiculous that no major development has taken place until now (June 2011). This inability of the government to move quickly on key strategic developments is the reason that Orissa and India are not able to achieve their right place in the global economy. I urge state and central governments to make this a priority and act promptly on key infrastructure developments.

    Best wishes,
    Kanishka Arora

Staying abroad, but our hometown is Jharsuguda. So we have to travel for 24 hrs before we reach home. Because of all the trains now not being on time, it is soo inconvenient. PLSSS we need an airport in Jharsuguda urgently, desperately!!

Orissa being neglected from ages. Even though we are rich in natural resources. We are having surplus electricity, iron ores, minerals and possible there may be deposition of oil & gas in Mahanadi. But still after the 60+ years of independence we are still not yet developed.

I know India is not that developed too. But compare to other states of India we are lacking behind. It is because of our own people, the Representatives of Orissa (CM, other political people), who represent for us (Odiyas) in the Center (Delhi).

We need our Representative should strong enough to get his/her demand in front of the Government of India irrespective of his/her political alliance whether Congress, BJP, BJD or XYZ…….

Nobody ever ready to accept that we (in Bhubaneswar) do not have an international airport yet. People who not yet travelled to Orissa/ Bhubaneswar are surprised to hear that. It is really a shame and hard to give excuse to those people that why we don’t have an international airport yet.

I don’t know whether our Representatives can wake up and do something for us. We are only hearing that billions of billions of dollar projects are in pipeline for Orissa but where?????? People of Orissa not yet feel it……..

  35. ID # 3740 :  RUTUPARNA SARANGI  (HOUSTON) says:

Having an International airport in the state capital is long overdue. With the emergence of Bhubaneswar as a major educational hub , a hot destination for IT companies with more than 50 MOU’s in processing and manufacturing sector with TATA, MITTAL,POSCO and many in pipeline, and its cultural heritage being the all time attraction for tourists and scholars , not having good air connectivity with the world is a disgrace in otherwise optimistic and prosperous state. By prosperity I mean we are having cluster of industries around the capital , well distributed in western, northwestern and southern odisha (keonjhar, kalinganagar, jharasuguda, rourkela, anugul, sunabeda, rayagada, lanjigada and many small industrial estates) all built on our own natural resources. With the state government in favorable disposition to expedite upgradation of bhubaneswar airport and development of smaller airports near the major industrial estates the UPA government under the stewardship of Manmohan Singh should not show step motherly attitude towards this. With improved air connectivity the mission of making odisha an industrially prosperous state like gujarat ,maharashtra and punjab can only be realized.
